Dr. Biykem Bozkurt, MD, PhD, is an expert in cardiology and heart failure. She is the Senior Dean of Faculty and Professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, where she holds the Mary and Gordon Cain Chair of Internal Medicine and serves as Director of the Winters Center for Heart Failure. Dr. Bozkurt is globally recognized for her leadership and scientific contributions, having been named among Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers every year since 2018 and holding an H-index over 100. Her research spans translational studies on pro-inflammatory cytokines in heart failure, phase II–III clinical trials, and large-scale clinical outcomes studies.
Dr. Bozkurt has held prominent national leadership roles, including President of the Heart Failure Society of America (2019–2020), Chair of the 2021 Universal Definition and Classification of Heart Failure, and Vice Chair of the 2022 AHA/ACC Heart Failure Clinical Practice Guidelines. She continues to lead clinical research, deliver patient care, and advance academic medicine and education. She is Editor-in-Chief of JACC: Heart Failure and serves on steering and data monitoring committees for major international clinical trials, as well as in senior leadership roles within leading cardiovascular societies.
Her career has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Proctor Harvey, MD Award and Gifted Educator Award from the American College of Cardiology, Baylor College of Medicine Presidential Awards for Education, Lifetime Master Clinician, and Professionalism, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hellenic Society of Heart Failure, and the Distinguished Leadership Award from the Heart Failure Society of America. In 2025, she received the ACC Distinguished Fellow Award and the Laennec Clinician Educator Award from the American Heart Association. She serves on the executive council of the American University Cardiologists and is frequently invited to deliver visiting professorships, keynote lectures, and plenary presentations at national and international meetings.
